Overview of the Standard Visitor Visa

The Standard Visitor visa allows eligible individuals to visit the UK for a temporary period for permitted purposes such as tourism, visiting family and friends, certain business activities, short-term study and other activities allowed under the Visitor Rules.

Most visitors can stay in the UK for up to six months, although the exact conditions of permission depend on the circumstances of the visit. A visitor must comply with the conditions of the route and cannot use repeated visits to make the UK their main home.

A successful application requires more than simply demonstrating a desire to visit the UK. The Home Office must be satisfied that the applicant is a genuine visitor, intends to leave the UK at the end of the visit and has sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay without undertaking prohibited work or relying on public funds.

Who Can Apply for a Standard Visitor Visa?

The Standard Visitor route may be suitable for people who want to come to the UK temporarily for a range of permitted purposes.

These can include:

  • Visiting family members or friends
  • Taking a holiday or travelling as a tourist
  • Attending certain business meetings or events
  • Carrying out permitted business activities
  • Undertaking certain short-term study
  • Attending certain academic activities
  • Taking part in permitted paid engagements
  • Receiving private medical treatment where the relevant requirements are met

The activities permitted under the Visitor route are defined by the Immigration Rules. A visitor must not use this route to undertake employment that is not permitted, access public funds or live in the UK through frequent or successive visits.

The purpose of the visit should therefore be clearly established before an application is made.

Genuine Visitor Requirement

One of the most important aspects of a Standard Visitor visa application is demonstrating that you are a genuine visitor.

The Home Office will consider whether you genuinely intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit and whether the proposed activities are consistent with the Visitor route.

Your personal circumstances may be relevant to this assessment. Depending on the application, this can include your employment, family circumstances, financial position, previous travel history, immigration history and connections to your country of residence.

For example, an applicant who is employed overseas and has established financial and family ties outside the UK may be able to provide evidence supporting their intention to return. However, every application is assessed according to its individual circumstances.

Costs of a standard visitor visa

Applicants should be able to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover the costs of their proposed visit.

This can include the cost of:

  • Accommodation
  • Food and everyday expenses
  • Travel within the UK
  • Return or onward travel
  • Other reasonable costs associated with the visit

There is not one fixed amount of money that every Standard Visitor must have in their bank account. The financial evidence should be considered in relation to the proposed length and nature of the visit.

Where a family member, friend or another person in the UK is providing financial support or accommodation, this should be clearly explained and supported by appropriate evidence.

The source of funds can also be important. Large or unexplained deposits may require clarification, particularly where the applicant’s normal income does not appear to support the balance shown.

Supporting Documents

The documents required will depend on the circumstances of the applicant and the purpose of the visit.

Evidence may include:

  • A valid passport or travel document
  • Bank statements and evidence of income
  • Employment or business evidence
  • Evidence of accommodation
  • Details of the proposed visit
  • Evidence of family or other connections outside the UK
  • Evidence from a UK-based sponsor where someone is providing support
  • Evidence relating to the specific purpose of the visit

Not every applicant will need to provide the same documents. The important issue is whether the evidence submitted provides a clear and credible picture of the applicant’s circumstances and proposed visit.

Previous Refusals and Immigration History

Previous visa refusals do not automatically prevent someone from applying for a Standard Visitor visa again. However, any previous refusal should be carefully considered before a new application is submitted.

If the applicant has previously been refused, the reasons for refusal should be addressed rather than simply submitting the same evidence again.

Previous immigration breaches, overstaying, refusals or other immigration history may also need to be considered when assessing the application.

A carefully prepared application should explain any relevant issues clearly and provide evidence where necessary.
